Hello Members,
As we are preparing to begin a new chapter year, I want to start by saying that this has been a great year for our chapter, despite the challenges COVID has presented. We are projected to be a Gold Level Chapter for the 2020-2021 chapter year, which is outstanding. I want to thank the chapter officers and chair members for all of your hard work, and more importantly, I want to thank all of our members. It was a challenge, but we managed to hold some great virtual meetings with great attendance.
With that said, we are looking at starting to get back to in person meetings this fall. The big thing I am excited about is having our Summer Social in August and I look forward to seeing everyone there. This will be my last year as Chapter President and I look forward to it being another successful year for our chapter, with new things to come. I am always available and open to hearing new meeting ideas, hearing from members that want to get more involved in the chapter (we always have room for more), and anything else that I can help with. Feel free to reach out to me anytime.

ASSP Board of Directors Senior Vice President: Jim Thornton
Congratulations to Jim on being elected into the role of Senior Vice President of the American Society of Safety Professionals! James R. Thornton CSP, CIH, FASSP, FAIHA is the retired Director of EH&S at Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII), the nation's leading designer, builder, and refueler of nuclear and non-nuclear powered aircraft carriers, submarines, and surface vessels. Jim held previous positions in safety and health at Research Triangle Institute in Research Triangle Park, N.C. and the Tennessee Valley Authority in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Thornton is currently Chairman of the Government Affairs Committee for ASSP. He is a Fellow of ASSP and AIHA. He served as Chairman of the OSHA Maritime Advisory Committee for Safety and Health (MACOSH) and is a recipient of the U.S. Department of Labor Distinguished Service Impact Award for his work with OSHA. Thornton served as President of the American Industrial Hygiene Association and Chairman of the American Board of Industrial Hygiene. He was formerly President of the Virginia Self-Insurers Workers Compensation Association, and is Chairman of the Virginia Manufacturer’s Association’s Safety, Health, and Environmental Committee. He also is Chairman of the Virginia Peninsula Chapter for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).

| ASSP Region VI PDC The ASSP Region 6 PDC, Professional Development Conference, will take place Wednesday, August 25- Friday, August 27, 2021 in Myrtle Beach, SC. Virtual options are also available for the pre-conference workshop and conference.

The 60th Annual Safety Conference and Exposition will take place Monday, September 13-Wednesday, September 15, 2021 in Austin, TX. In person and virtual experiences are being offered this year!
