Jeremiah “Jeremy” Winstead, Safety Director, Power Electric Company

Years as an ASSP member: 1.5 Years
Years in the safety industry: 6 Years as Field Foreman/ 1.5 Years Full Time

Key responsibilities of your job

As Safety Director at Power Electric Company, I am responsible for coordinating and working with upper management to aid in overseeing all company activities. My duties include staying up to date with regulatory changes, managing safety plans and documents, handling safety submittals, conducting site inspections, and overseeing employee training and new hire orientations.

Most significant accomplishment in your career

Throughout my career, I have progressed from a high school graduate entering the construction industry to completing an electrical apprenticeship, earning my journeyman’s license, becoming a foreman managing million-dollar projects, and ultimately assuming the role of Safety Director. While there have been numerous significant accomplishments along the way, I consider earning a BS in Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) after 13 years out of high school to enhance my knowledge and establish myself as a safety professional as my greatest achievement to date.

What do you/did you love the most about your job

What I love most about my job is applying my field experience to ensure the safety of our employees and aligning our practices with industry standards. It’s incredibly rewarding to contribute to our team’s safety and well-being, ensuring everyone returns home safely each day.

What advice would you give someone just starting out in the safety industry

For those embarking on a career in safety, my advice is twofold. First, understand that not all decisions you make will please everyone, even if they are made to protect them. Second, seek out local safety committees like ASSP or ABC for networking opportunities with fellow safety professionals. Sharing knowledge and experiences within this community can be invaluable, as there are no secrets in safety, and we are all here to support one another.
