Key responsibilities of your job
Head of Health, Safety, and Environmental for our flagship location in Hampton, VA. My position focuses on safety leadership through employee engagement with an emphasis on risk reduction and the implementation of proactive measures.
Most significant accomplishment in your career
Successful implantation of a fully functional team of Safety Champions within the plant. This team of hourly employees was able to identify risk and proactively correct safety hazards and at-risk behaviors in a facility of 900 employees. The last two years of the plant being open, team successfully closed facility with zero incidents (first aid/recordable/loss time/environmental spills).
What do you/did you love the most about your job
I enjoy daily interactions with my team, problem solving, and making the workplace better for my employees!
What advice would you give someone just starting out in the safety industry
In your career you will often encounter people that carry a negative attitude towards “Safety Cops”. It should be your mission to positively interact with your employees to change the mindset. As this transition takes place, your people will see that you are there to Help and not to Hinder. A positive safety culture is contagious – once you get the CAVE people under control. (Citizens Against Virtually Everything). Don’t give up, make each day better than the previous day!
