Spring has been a busy season for the GTC! Our executive board has been busy volunteering and making connections with local students. We attended 2 career fairs in Virginia Beach, one at the Technical & Career Education Center and Landstown High School, where we had the chance to interact with students and share with them idea and opportunity of a career path in the safety and health profession. We also had time to network with local businesses and schools such as Tidewater Community College.

These connections led to a joint field trip in April with Sussex Development and ASSP GTC at the construction site for a new community center in Newport News. The purpose was to share different career paths with the students including HVAC, electrical, engineering and you guessed it– the safety & health profession.

Our chapter President also had the privilege of speaking to Tidewater Community College’s dual enrollment high school/college students in the Electrical Program with the option to focus on Occupational Safety. Amazing where our interactions can lead and the opportunities that open! And that goes for any of us, anywhere, anytime.
In April we also hosted our spring ASSP/ODU joint meeting with the Student National Environmental Health Association on campus with a great turnout of students and professionals. We enjoyed hearing from two of our members with engineering backgrounds share their story of getting into the safety profession with these young adults. We presented student Amya Turner, graduating this year, with a $500 scholarship. The following week, our chapter co-hosted with AIHA (American Industrial Hygiene Association) a social at Hank’s Filling Station in Norfolk with the intent to encourage students to come out and network with professionals.
There are lots of amazing things happening in our chapter. Interested in getting involved? Contact us! We are always looking for more volunteers. It takes a village, but its awesome when you can have fun and enjoy what you do. president@tidewater.assp.org.
